I read The Hindu (electronic version) this morning and was stunned to know that Radhika Selvi has been named as an Union Minister and that her portfolio is to be decided later.
Why am I stunned? This lady is the widow of one Venkatesa Pannaiyar of Thiruchendur who was killed in a police encounter about 4 years back. There is no other qualification or any record of political activities for this person. The DMK gave her a Lok Sabha ticket to encash on the sympathy factor and has now named her as an Union Minister.
I have nothing personal against this lady but I am really concerned about the way and the basis on which our Ministers are selected. And we are under a delusion that there are still some criteria for Ministerial posts!
