A World Cup for Club Cricket?

This thought stemmed from the interaction with a guest who shared her comments on an earlier post, “England, where art thou?

If Teams can have coaches from other countries, how about players from other parts of the world as well? If this would create problems of nationalities and raise issues of patriotism, we can simply organize them as clubs ala United Manchester, Real Madrid etc. Anyway the existing cricket format is so commercial that it cannot get any worse!

I am also aware that most of county cricket in England is based on the club format with lots of international players but there is no opportunity for them to participate beyond the shores of England.

My suggestion is : Let there be clubs in India and every cricket playing country with international flavour. As a matter of fact there are many clubs in Chennai (a city in India) itself at different league levels and several state level teams that fight for the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Irani Trophy etc but they do not go beyond the boundaries of their city or state. The best clubs in each country (based on some objective performance criteria) will get to compete in the international arena.

Is there a Kerry Packer out there listening?

Ok I am actually a Her, not a Him lol. My dad used to school me in cricket and rugby as a child. It is not the first time someone has mistaken me for a male…quite amusing actually.

I think that you have the right idea…but Im not sure it would work. I mean with the americas cup, I myself called those who jumped ship from the kiwi team to especially the swiss team, traitors. So perhaps the team members from other countries would have to endure some form of criticism to begin with provided that they are allowed to play for other teams to begin with.

Just my thoughts…would be a wicked event if it could work.

sorry about the mistaken identity! its habitual and nothing intentional.

what you say is really valid if some players actually defect from one country to another which is not what i am proposing. Imagine Nathan Astle and Fleming actually playing for a club in India without sacrificing their interests to represent NZ! Very similar to the Somerset or Nottingham counties except that we are talking about an international level!!

That would be so cool, but I know kiwi’s….Alot would see it as defecting even if those of us with open minds dont. I mean it would be great to see kiwi’s getting out there and lifting the standing of other countries in the cricketing world. And I totally understand the whole mistaken Identity thing and im so not worried about it. What we need…is for…what was his name…Hadlow I think it was…hes retired but perhaps having him as a coach would make some sort of a difference? Kinda like Collin “pine tree” meads and his coaching of the younger teams in new zealand…
