Eating Your Words!

I just came across an article written by Peter Roebuck (prior to the world cup) wherein he has something to say about the Aussies’ chances in the world cup.

Australia’s chances of retaining the World Cup have shrunk. Their aura of invincibility has been broken. It was a precious asset. The five defeats suffered in the last fortnight have been caused by a combination of poor thinking and slipshod cricket. On this form Ricky Poonting’s side will be lucky to reach the final. Certainly the recent losses have been welcomed by every opponent. Phone lines from New Zealand and India have been running hot. Suddenly the Australians look vulnerable. Rival teams have been waiting a long time for this day to dawn. They will not miss their chance.

Shows how appearances are clearly deceptive.  Aussies not only won the Cup but also did so by winning every match of the tournament.  They wrecked NZ by 215 runs and every other nation by a convincing margin.

I am reminded of Steve Waugh’s words on losing to Pakistan in the opening match of 1999 world cup.  He said that “we will win every match from now onwards” and they did!

Sadly, Peter had also misunderstood the Aussies’ resilience and their ability to bounce back.

Even experts are vulnerable!
