Curtain raiser for 16 Treasures

A few decades back, newly wedded couples in Tamil Nadu would be blessed by elders thus “Padhinarum Petru Peru vaazhvu vaazga” to mean “Live a wonderful life by receiving 16 treasures”.  Since the word “petru” also meant “to give birth to”, it was quite unfortunate that this blessing was misconstrued as “give birth to 16 children” and all the relatives used this to make fun of the newly weds.  Possibly, the previous generations took it literally and started contributing to the nation’s population in right earnest!!

I used to wonder about what these 16 meant but did not ask anybody or do any research.  A good friend of mine Sriram sent me an sms on the instance of the Tamizh New Year day wherein he listed all these 16 Treasures.

I intend to write an individual post on each of these Treasures in the days to come.  A cursory reading of this list itself gave me goose pimples because it showed how our ancestors understood Life in the right perspective.  Ask 100 people what they want and it is most likely that money will be at the top and perhaps the only entry with some.  What a short term approach to Life!!

Do join me in this wonderful journey of exploring a true blessing!!
