Launching our ‘Melody-Only’ Tamil Music Band

On 8th December 2011, I had formally unveiled “Ever Green Melodies” (EGM), our ‘Melody-Only’  Tamil Film music band. to the world at large through emails to friends and family, a tweet and a facebook page besides a few sms to local contacts.

I am grateful to all the people who not only visited the website but also  responded with their feedback and best wishes.  I’m really touched by the calls from friends and by the mails wanting to know our charges for doing a program in Chennai and elsewhere.

A couple wanted to know why I’m doing this and although I have tried to answer it in the FAQ page in the website, I thought it better to use this forum to share the thought process that triggered the formation of EGM.

I have taken part in many light music concerts in Chennai with different troupes in the past, albeit not regularly.  Even 25 years back, when I made my debut, there were a few soft melodies but then the bulk of the songs were fast ones with some inane lyrics from the then hit films.  It was the time when Ilayaraja was at the peak churning out hits by the dozen with an amazing regularity.  Given the prolific number of hits that he was giving, even some of his great songs of the yester years were not played in light music concerts, what to talk about the bygone era of Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy or KVM, leave alone the giant G Ramanathan?

I yearned to sing the rich melodies from those legends and sung by the incomparable TMS, P Susheela, AM Raja, PB Sreenivas and the lilting numbers by SPB and KJJ for different music directors.  I also began to understand reality that unless you have your own troupe, it would be next to impossible to  focus on the melodies exclusively.  I did not have the urge to take the plunge then.

The current day scenario of light music is even more pathetic with melodies being totally absent and noise being pre-dominant.  But then, what can they do if these are the hits of today?

I felt that I had waited on the side-lines for too long for someone to make a difference and then decided that I would be that person.    On that day and moment, Ever Green Melodies was born but it took a while for it to take shape.

It is my intention to provide a rich listening experience to the audience and take them back to those years of pleasant memories.

Looking forward to your support.
