There are other numerals too!!

I saw in the news today that the Central and Kerala State Government intend to spend Rs500 crore on Tourism!  on the face of it, there is nothing wrong about it.  But then it really beats me that they get it exactly at Rs.500 crores, not 497 or 506!!  How could this possibly be?

And this is not an isolated case.  Open the newspapers and you will find planned investments of 1200 crores, intended buyouts @1000 crores and so on.  The actual figures are not so round as you can see if you follow the subsequent developments.

Look at the recent purchase of Numeric Power Systems by Legrand for a consideration of Rs.806.44 crores!! Even the decimals are not 0’s and that is the reality but then everyone wants things to be well-rounded and there you have the press reporting this deal at over Rs.800 crores.

I recall reading about one of the Ambani brothers who treated with disdain an estimate by a MNC to repair their production unit in 100 days on the grounds that not much work has gone in preparing the estimate and hence the figure is too round to be really accurate!!  I concur with their stand.

It takes a little effort to say and remember a round figure, I admit but that ought not be the basis for such calculations.

Same with scams – neither the people who took the money nor the people from whom it was taken (you and me) know the quantum – let alone to round it to the nearest hundereds, thousands or lacks or crores.

    Dear Badri,

This is how the Media and Government work together and this is to be hailed as ‘Private Sector and Public Sector Partnership’ to loot the frugal exchequer of our Nation.

And WE the Proud People of this country turn out to be the mute spectators to this sort of an organised loot in the form of newer and newer schemes of different types being announced from time to time, irrespective of whether they ultimately get implemented or not !

And that’s the emerging India !

    God Save this Country !

    Thus Spake N Ra
