We were really fortunate

This afternoon my friend Ramesh invited me for a function on Paramacharyal being held at Sankara Netralaya and I am really grateful to him for that invitation.

Today is the 19th moksha anniversary of this Sage. Hence the star and the english date were the same as on the date when he shed his mortal coil.  At the venue, we were welcomed by none other than Dr S S Badrinath, Chairman Emeritus, Sankara Netralaya

The function was the release of a series of lectures that Paramacharyal had delivered at Sanskrit college Chennai between 1957 and 1959 in the form of a CD pack.  The event was compered by a very lively Revathy Sankaran and the invocation on Mahaswami was rendered by Trichur Brothers as a Ragamalika.  And while we were listening to the composition, we also had the treat of watching some visuals about the sage taken at different times.

We then became privy to the long story behind this historic task of restoring a 50+ year old tape in the modern format.  it was very clear that this project was guided at every stage by a divine hand.

The CD was released by none other than the 46th Pontiff of Ahobila Mutt and this is very significant because a Vishisthadvaita proponent was participating in an event about his advaiti counterpart.  This was in fact shared by the Azhagiya Singar during his “anugraha bashanam”.

The recipients of the CD from the Azhagiya Singar were noted danseuse   Padma Subramaniam, ghatam vidwan Vikku Vinayakram, Dr Kalyanaraman, a highly respected neurophysician, actor Vinu Chakravarthy, ex-minister RM Veerapan, sculptor Ganapathi Stapathi and a couple more.

This was followed by a much-awaited speech by Dr Subramanian Swamy who did not disappoint the audience.  He shared with us  his first and subsequent meetings with the Paramacharya including the latter’s instruction to file a case in the Supreme Court directly to protest against the former’s arrest while trying to travel to Katchatheevu.

The Azhagiya Singar was emotional when he shared his personal experiences with the Sage of Kanchi.  One was about the deep respect  the Mahaswami had for his Vaishnava tradition  and the other was when he was dissuaded by the Mahaswami to stay in India just hours before he was to leave to Germany.

We also listened to Periyava’s speech as an extract from the CD and it was amazing how he included himself with us at every occassion.  He did not, for once, say that “you need to do this” or “You are not doing this” when it would have been perfectly acceptable.  That was his greatness!!

After the treat to the ears, the organizers also provided prasadam.  I purchased one set of CDs for my listening pleasure and hopefully will write a post or two about that as well.

It was a great evening and I am really happy that I attended the function.

I was also present at the event but could only view the video show on 8th floor, I am not sure if they did live streaming/video upload of this event which could have been benefit to those who may have missed it.
